  Why Timber

Wood is a natural resource, the global forests are vital parts of our planets eco-structure, as well as being the source of mankind’s most useful materials. Wood has been an essential for shelter and fuel for centuries.

The timber used in the construction of timber frame buildings comes from well-managed forests to meet both the demands of the environment and the user community. This ensures that a sustainable yield is achieved, with two trees planted for every one cut down.

  Environmentally friendly

There is no more environmentally friendly way to build

Timber is the most environmentally acceptable material in modern construction as no other building material offers the unique combination of environmental benefits:

a. Natural, organic & non-toxic.
b. Recyclable, biodegradable and waste efficient.
c. Renewable - European softwood plantations are currently in surplus production with standing stocks of timber increasing annually by 252 million m3 – almost 30 times the UK annual consumption of wood (source UN-ECE FAO TBFRA2000)
d. Wood is effectively a carbon-neutral material (even allowing for transport).
e. Trees are net producers of oxygen-they are the lungs of our planet. Some experts are calling for more trees to be planted to absorb existing CO2 to assist with strategies to reverse global warming and the greenhouse effect.
f. Sustainable – using recognised harvesting principles and crop rotation.
g. Low embodied energy – converting timber into a usable building material takes far less energy and generates far fewer greenhouse gasses then any other mainstream alternatives.
h. Once installed, wood is an excellent insulating material with extremely good energy efficiency.
